MRI diagnostics for overweight people: is there a tomograph for obese patients?

Magnetic resonance imaging is a common type of examination that allows one to analyze the functioning of internal organs and systems in several projections and obtain clear images.

The procedure is completely safe for health, is widely used in various areas of medicine, but has several contraindications, including excess weight.

MRI, up to what weight are there restrictions, what types of tomographs are suitable in this case and how to properly undergo examination for obese patients?

Weight limit for MRI

Tomographs for magnetic resonance scanning are divided into closed and open. The first are a structure consisting of a retractable table and a tunnel-shaped device with sensors.

They are considered more informative, but at the same time they have restrictions on the volume, height, and weight of the subject. The diameter of the tunnel is 60-70 cm, the patient's weight is 120-130 kilograms. Larger MRIs can be performed on open-type tomographs.

The device can withstand up to 200-220 kg, but at the same time there is a risk of taking not very high-quality images.

MRIs weighing 150 kg or more can only be performed on open tomographs, which consist of a movable table and parallel electromagnetic sensors.

The open form of the tomograph allows diagnostics without conditions based on the patient’s physical parameters.

Modern MRI machines have sufficient power, which makes it possible to accurately determine various anomalies and pathological changes in the functioning of internal organs and systems.

MRI weighing more than 120 kg on a closed tomograph is carried out provided that the waist size is 70 cm. Before the procedure on an open or closed machine, the patient removes all metal objects, excluding other contraindications to the procedure.

The duration of the procedure is 20-40 minutes. Overweight patients sometimes find it difficult to remain motionless during the procedure. In such cases, the doctor may suggest taking a sedative. If you have difficulties with positioning on the couch or changing body position, medical staff will help you cope with them.

According to some sources, in the near future there will be open tomographs that will not be inferior in power to closed capsule units. Many modern clinics and diagnostic centers are equipped with modern installations that allow obese people to easily undergo examinations, while receiving clear and high-quality images.

Open MRI machines are suitable not only for overweight people, but also for children, those who suffer from claustrophobia or mentally unstable individuals.

How does excess weight affect MRI results?

MRI of previous generations was performed only on patients whose weight did not exceed 130 kg, but now large weight is not an obstacle to examination. It is quite possible to obtain high-quality images for patients weighing up to 180 kg and above. Completeness does not in any way affect the quality of the results. For greater information, the procedure is carried out with the introduction of a contrast agent.

The difficulty in undergoing MRI for obese people is the following:

  • the clinic does not have an open-type tomograph;
  • old equipment is used for diagnostics;
  • difficulty placing the patient in the active zone of the tomograph.

To avoid possible problems, when registering for an MRI, it is important to clarify whether the proposed device is a tunnel device and what diameters it has. The size of the area that the coil can accommodate is also considered an important indicator. Sometimes the patient’s body weight is within the permissible limits of the device, and the diagnosis itself is impossible due to the fact that the dimensions of the examined area exceed the diameter of the coil.

Modern diagnostic centers offer overweight patients to undergo MRI diagnostics using modern tomographs, obtain accurate images, and recognize the slightest disturbances within the body.

Carrying out the procedure

MRI for large people is carried out in the same way as for patients who are not prone to obesity. If it is done without contrast, there is no need to prepare for the study. Before going into the tomograph capsule, it is enough to remove all metal objects from yourself. This is necessary, since during the procedure, under the influence of magnetic waves, they heat up and can cause a burn.

If you need to perform diagnostics with contrast, you should refuse to eat 5-6 hours before the examination. This is to ensure that you feel comfortable during the MRI. Otherwise, mild nausea and slight dizziness may occur after administration of the drug.

MRI for obese people (up to 120–150 kg)

With the advent of modern tomographic equipment, many restrictions associated with patients' body weight have been removed.

Improved models of tomographs have significantly increased the load capacity and diameter of the tunnel, which has made MRI a procedure accessible to most people with large weights.

In the absence of contraindications, anyone who needs high-quality diagnostics can undergo this examination.

Features of MRI in overweight

According to statistics, obese people get sick more often. One of the reasons for the development of negative consequences of obesity is untimely diagnosis of diseases.

Just a few years ago, overweight patients were not given MRIs. The load capacity of standard tomograph models is up to 120 kg, the tunnel diameter is up to 60 cm.

Due to the increase in the number of obese people, tomographs have been created that can withstand body weights of up to 150 kg.

There are 2 types of devices:

  1. Closed tomographs operate at high speed and accurately visualize the structure and location of pathological foci in the body. It is these installations that have weight restrictions. For most models, the limit is 120 kg.
  2. Open tomographs are somewhat inferior to closed ones in terms of power and image quality, but for many patients for whom tunnel scanning is contraindicated, this is the only opportunity to get an MRI, find out the diagnosis and receive timely medical care.

The conditions for performing MRI for large people are the same as for patients with normal body weight. The cost of the procedure can only be affected by the need to use a contrast agent. If you are overweight, more of it is required, and accordingly, the price of an MRI will be higher.

Advantages of MRI diagnostics at the Central Clinical Hospital of the Russian Academy of Sciences

  • Safe, no radiation exposure, multiple repeat examinations possible
  • High diagnostic efficiency
  • Experienced doctors guarantee the accuracy of the diagnosis and the quality of the completed protocol

Indications and contraindications

It is advisable to undergo diagnostics using a magnetic resonance imaging scanner if you have symptoms such as:

  • frequent headaches;
  • recurring dizziness;
  • signs of sclerosis;
  • spinal injuries;
  • visual and hearing impairments;
  • constant pain in different locations.

Magnetic resonance imaging is most often the method of choice when tumor processes are suspected.

Contraindications for MRI:

  • acute mental disorders;
  • pregnancy (first trimester);
  • the presence in the body of metal objects, artificial heart valves, pacemakers.

If there are contraindications, the attending physician selects alternative examination methods.

Where to get magnetic resonance imaging done in Moscow?

The Moscow clinic of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Russian Academy of Sciences is ready to perform MRI on patients weighing up to 150 kg. Appointment without a doctor's referral is possible. The patient's consent to the study and the absence of contraindications is sufficient. Qualified specialists with many years of experience will help you prepare for the procedure, conduct diagnostics at a convenient time and issue a detailed report.

To make an appointment for an examination and clarify the cost of services, you can call or use a special form on the website.

What types of clinical equipment are there?

Magnetic resonance imaging devices are used by doctors to identify dangerous diseases in the initial stages of their development. The standard assembly of the tomograph is represented by a retractable table, which is placed deep into the device with a diameter of 70 centimeters. This type belongs to a closed category and is not available for use by obese patients. The developments of engineers who created open-shaped devices helped to avoid difficulties with such patients. They have a magnetic coil located at the top and bottom, and the sides are open. The structure makes it easy to do MRI for people with heavy weight in Moscow. However, there are disadvantages - reduced detail of the resulting images. An additional limitation is the presence of a metal alloy structure in the patient’s body and the carrying of a child.

Additional challenges of MRI for heavier people

Obesity is not considered the only difficulty in assessing the condition. Common cases include abnormal volumes in specific areas of the body. For example, the circumference of the knee or thigh area may not fit the size of the installed coil. In such a situation, medical staff will under no circumstances be able to conduct a scan. As a result of such indicators, doctors at specialized medical centers clarify in advance the basic parameters of the body from patients who are preparing for the session.

How does body weight affect the final results?

The fact that a patient is obese cannot in any way affect the readings of magnetic resonance diagnostics. The degree of accuracy, duration and effectiveness of the technique are no different from standard testing. Difficulty can only arise when placing the patient in the active area of the tomograph. For obese individuals, conducting an MR scan with an additional enhancer in the form of a contrast agent will cost significantly more due to the increase in the amount of the component used.

Are there restrictions on MRI for obese people in terms of weight, up to how many kg of weight can an MRI procedure be performed?

Today, the average weight of an adult is 62 kg. Scientists have calculated that 5% of the weight of all inhabitants of the planet is an additive associated with obesity and overweight. Indeed, people with large body weight make up a significant percentage of the population. And they also need to dress, buy furniture, and get treatment.

Many overweight patients require diagnostic tests to establish a diagnosis or to determine the general condition of the body. One of the modern methods that allows high-precision examination of human organs and tissues is MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). The article will describe how MRI is performed for obese people.

MRI of a woman weighing 114 kg and MRI of a woman weighing 54 kg

Hardware limitations of tomographs

MRI examination is carried out using a special device - a tomograph. They are

  • closed type
  • open type

The main difference, besides the design, is the strength of the magnetic field generated by the tomograph. So for closed devices this value is up to 3 Tesla, while for open devices it is up to 1 Tesla. The lower the electromagnetic field, the longer the procedure can take and the less accurate the result will be.

MRI closed and open types

When performing MRI, weight restrictions are 120–150 kg for closed tomographs (there are models with a 200 kg limit). These data should not be considered absolute, since it is worth taking into account the diameter of the pipe of the apparatus.

To undergo this procedure, the height and width of the subject’s body must be less than 60 cm (for some devices the value is 80 cm).

Thus, even if the patient’s weight meets the standard, but he is short, it will be difficult to undergo a closed-type MRI examination.

Open MRI examination

Therefore, today open-type tomography is rapidly gaining momentum, which allows MRI to be performed for people with large weights. Open type devices, unlike closed ones, can be used to examine any patients.

MRI for obese people weighing 200 kg: indications

Magnetic resonance examination of a specific part of the body is prescribed for the following complaints:

  • Regular acute pain in the head area, dizziness.
  • The likelihood of damage to the nervous system.
  • Suspicion of the formation of a benign or malignant neoplasm, edema.
  • Risk of progression of abnormalities.
  • Malfunctions in the functioning of auditory and visual reflexes.
  • Damage.
  • Sclerosis is the replacement of cellular elements with connective tissue.
  • Encephalomyelitis is an inflammatory reaction occurring in the spinal cord or brain, which is provoked by the ingress of viral agents, the appearance of an allergic reaction or intoxication.

MRI for obese people, features of the procedure, which tomograph is suitable - Medsi

Magnetic resonance imaging is a type of research that allows you to make several projections of the analyzed organs using a tomograph apparatus. The action of this device is based on the phenomenon of resonance and magnetic fields and on the different display of tissues of different structures as a result.

This procedure is completely painless because it is non-invasive (does not require any tissue incisions or sutures), and is safe for the patient because the body is not irradiated, as is the case with an X-ray examination. At the same time, it is considered one of the most accurate examinations.

Thanks to MRI, you can get a clear image of different organs:

  • Brain
  • Of cardio-vascular system
  • Gastrointestinal tract and others

This is necessary to determine the presence of diseases and pathologies such as:

  • Tumors and metastases
  • Inflammatory processes
  • Consequences of injuries to bones, skull and spine
  • Anomalies in development

MRI is also used to monitor the results of surgery or non-invasive treatment.

Since such a study is safe, it can be done many times over a short period of time.

Features of the MRI procedure for obese people

Often, when trying to sign up for an MRI in Moscow, a patient with a large weight may encounter obstacles in undergoing this procedure. The reason for this problem lies in the size and weight limitations of the tomographs used.

Standard scanning devices consist of a retractable table and a tunnel-shaped device equipped with sensors. Such a table is designed for a patient’s weight up to 120, occasionally up to 150 kilograms.

Additionally, the ability to scan patients is limited by the diameter of the examination tube. If the patient’s body is larger, then he will not be able to fit inside the tomograph.

When is an MRI prescribed for obese people?

Magnetic resonance imaging is prescribed to a complete patient in such cases as:

  • Frequent and severe headaches, dizziness
  • Suspicion of diseases of the nervous system
  • The likelihood of a different type of tumor (cancer, adenoma) or edema
  • Possibility of developing pathologies or abnormalities
  • Impaired hearing and/or vision
  • Head and spine injuries
  • Sclerosis – replacement of cells of various organs with connective tissues
  • Encephalomyelitis – inflammation of the spinal cord or brain due to viruses, allergies or toxins

In some situations, you cannot do without an MRI examination.

Contraindications

For obese people, there are restrictions when conducting such an analysis, as for other patients. This:

  • Pregnancy in the first trimester
  • Presence of metal implants or fragments
  • Use of electronic pacemakers, pacemakers, heart valves
  • Medical staples and clamps on blood vessels
  • Fear of confined spaces
  • Mental disorders
  • Patient imbalance

Examination on a standard tomograph for obese patients with large body girth is impossible due to the limitations of the device.

There are also restrictions on undergoing MRI with contrast:

  • Allergy to the components of the drug
  • Kidney disease, failure
  • Lactation

Which tomograph is better for people with greater weight?

For patients with a body weight of up to 130 kilograms and a volume of up to 140 centimeters, a tunnel-shaped tomograph is also suitable if they have no contraindications to being in a closed device:

  • Phobias of small spaces
  • Mental illnesses (epilepsy, schizophrenia)
  • Inability to remain in one position lying on your back for a long time due to injury or severe pain

If the weight and volume of the patient’s body is higher, standard magnetic resonance devices will not be suitable for him. But if it is necessary for a patient weighing up to 200 kg to undergo an MRI in Moscow, there is a solution - an open tomograph should be used.

This device includes:

  • A research table that can support a weight of up to 200 kg.
  • Parallel electromagnetic sensors

The space around the surface on which the patient is located remains open. Thanks to this, the diameter of the patient's body does not play any role.

This same design feature allows you to immediately use any treatment, including surgery. In this case, all actions will be immediately visible on the monitor.

With this configuration, it is easier to control both the examination and what is happening to the patient: his physical and mental state.

There is also a disadvantage of such a device: its power is less than that of a tunnel-shaped one, so the image of some organs may not be so well detailed. But if the examination cannot be carried out using another method, then even a less than clear result turns out to be extremely useful.

During pregnancy, patients weighing up to 200 kilograms must remember that they must tell the doctor about their “situation”, since MRI examinations in the first trimester are not recommended using any device. An exception appears only if it is impossible to diagnose the disease in any other way, and the patient’s condition is extremely serious.

Advantages of open MRI

The open magnetic resonance imaging unit is suitable for:

  • For overweight people
  • For children
  • For those suffering from claustrophobia
  • For mentally unstable individuals

It allows you to control everything that happens during the study, as well as talk with the patient if necessary. For the child being examined, this may make the procedure easier and help him lie still for the required time. The same applies to those who are unstable, suffer from a fear of closed spaces, have mental illnesses, as well as older people.

To examine such categories of patients using a tunnel-shaped apparatus, anesthesia is often used, which can have a bad effect on the body, but it is necessary for the person to lie still. Otherwise, the result becomes unclear and distorted. In an open tomograph, there is no need for anesthesia.

Due to the absence of walls, the device allows the necessary treatment to be used already during the examination.

You can also take tissue samples from the organ being examined for further analysis or perform surgery.

The design of the device allows the patient to position himself in a position that would be inaccessible to him in a standard tomograph. This is necessary if he has severe back pain, limbs are in casts, or in other similar cases.

An open MRI scanner is suitable for people with heavy weight (up to 200 kg) and a waist circumference of more than eighty centimeters.

In this case, medical personnel can help the patient lie down and get off the examination table, which is problematic in a conventional tomograph.

Disadvantages of MRI on an open machine

The main negative points when using devices of this type are:

  • Longer procedure time than with a standard tomograph
  • The detail of the results is inferior to a closed device

Only a doctor can correctly select the necessary tests and choose the type of device that is needed in each specific situation.

Advantages of carrying out the procedure at MEDSI

  • New generation tomographs that are suitable for people of different weight categories
  • Highly qualified specialists will conduct an appointment and help you select the necessary equipment for examination using MRI in Moscow for patients weighing up to 200 kg
  • Many clinics throughout Moscow (more than twenty)

Concept

Magnetic resonance diagnostics is a clinical study consisting of the interaction of a magnetic field and hydrogen atoms, which allows doctors to observe in real time three-dimensional images of the analyzed areas of the body, where deformations are visible in the first stages of anomaly development. Testing is considered a completely painless and safe test method, since it belongs to the non-invasive category, and the equipment does not emit toxic rays during operation. Along with these advantages, MRI scanning shows the most accurate and highly detailed information. Using a magnetic resonance imaging device, you can study the following body structures:

  • Brain.
  • Cardiovascular department.
  • Gastrointestinal tract.
  • Dorsal area, etc.

An examination is required to detect the following painful conditions and abnormalities:

  • Formation of neoplasms of various types and metastases.
  • The appearance of an inflammatory reaction.
  • Consequences of damage to bone areas, skull and spine.
  • Developmental anomalies.

Tomography is prescribed to patients to monitor indicators before and after surgery, to check the effectiveness of conventional therapy. Due to the increased level of security, testing is permitted many times in a short period of time.

Features of MRI for people with heavy weight

Obese people cannot be examined using a closed-type magnetic resonance imaging scanner. MRI has restrictions on the weight of the patient weighing 120 kg, as well as on the waist circumference of 70 cm. These are technical limitations that are determined by the diameter of the tunnel and other parameters of the equipment. Therefore, fat people are forced to look for clinics that have suitable tomographs.

The weight limit for open-type magnetic resonance imaging scanners is 200 kg. This is quite enough for almost any person. As for quality, such devices do not differ in information content from standard, closed ones. In this case, the magnets are located above and below the subject.

In addition to body weight restrictions, there are other contraindications:

  • The presence of metal prostheses in the patient’s body, if they cannot be removed.
  • Claustrophobia and other mental disorders.

Patients with claustrophobia can also be examined with this type of tomograph. Such equipment is also used for children.

Where can I get an MRI for obese people in Moscow?

Patients over 120 kg can have an MRI in Moscow in several medical institutions, each of which has a maximum weight limit for the patient, and it is above 120 kg.
